Introduction
Introduction of Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
A Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is a qualified professional responsible for ensuring that welding activities meet established codes, standards, and safety requirements. CWIs play a critical role in maintaining the quality, integrity, and reliability of welded structures across industries such as construction, oil and gas, manufacturing, power generation, and shipbuilding. Their expertise helps prevent structural failures, accidents, and costly rework.
The role of a CWI involves inspecting welding procedures, materials, equipment, and workmanship before, during, and after welding operations. They verify compliance with applicable standards such as AWS, ASME, ISO, and API codes. CWIs are trained to identify welding defects, interpret welding symbols and drawings, review welding procedure specifications (WPS), and ensure welder qualifications are valid.
In addition to quality control, Certified Welding Inspectors contribute to workplace safety by ensuring proper welding practices and adherence to safety regulations. Their inspections support regulatory compliance, project reliability, and long-term structural performance. By bridging the gap between design requirements and field execution, CWIs play a vital role in delivering safe, high-quality welded products and structures.
